This week in Cincinnati marked a milestone for Portuguese tennis. For the first time, Portugal had two players in the second round of a Masters 1000, and then went one step further with two players in the third round.

Jaime Faria came through qualifying and defeated world number 6 Ben Shelton without dropping a set. Nuno Borges, meanwhile, beat world number 18 Andrey Rublev and world number 25 Francisco Cerundolo to advance.

According to journalist José Morgado, the results represent the first time Portugal has placed two players in both the second and third rounds of a Masters 1000 event.
