Fonseca faces qualifier Safiullin for Wimbledon Round of 16 berth
Brazil's No. 1 meets Roman Safiullin, ranked 132nd, on Friday in the third round at the All England Club. The Russian qualifier has already eliminated 12th seed Rublev.
João Fonseca, seeded 24th, faces Russian qualifier Roman Safiullin on Friday in the third round of Wimbledon, with a Round of 16 berth on the line. Court and time are to be announced with the official schedule.
Safiullin, ranked 132nd, has been one of the tournament’s disruptive forces. He eliminated 12th seed Andrey Rublev in five sets in the opening round, then survived a second five-set battle against Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp — 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6 and 7-6 — to advance. On grass in 2026, the Russian holds seven wins against three losses. He also carries a notable credential from the same tournament: he was the last qualifier to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals, in 2023.
Fonseca arrives with momentum of his own. He defeated Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round and Jesper de Jong in the second, both in straight sets. Against De Jong, he hit 12 aces and committed just 14 unforced errors. “It was one of the best matches I’ve played on grass. I felt very good with my movement, serve, return and net play,” Fonseca said after the match, in comments reproduced by Punto de Break. He also outlined his approach to the surface: “On this surface, you have to be brave. You can’t be afraid of sliding or moving. If you hesitate, the ball runs you over. There are very few break-point opportunities, so you need to stay focused the entire match.”
First meeting, with a place in the Round of 16 at stake
The two players have never met on the professional tour. Safiullin dropped as low as 229th in the rankings in April before recovering to reach Wimbledon through qualifying, and has not made public comments about the matchup as of publication. The winner will advance to the Round of 16 — a stage Fonseca has yet to reach at Wimbledon.
