Alexandra Eala claimed her maiden WTA title at the rain-interrupted Washington Open, defeating top seed Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to become the first Filipino champion in tour history.

The 21-year-old recovered from losing the opening set to overturn the match against the American. The final was halted by rain on Sunday with Eala leading 2-1 in the second set, forcing the conclusion to Monday.

Upon resumption, Eala maintained her momentum to close out the victory. The WTA 500 crown marks the biggest title of her career.

The result propelled Eala into the top 20 of the WTA rankings for the first time.
