Grand Slam 🟤 Clay Paris, France · May–June

Roland Garros

The world's most important clay-court Grand Slam. Played at Stade Roland Garros since 1891, it was the stage for Brazilian tennis' greatest triumph, with Gustavo Kuerten (1997, 1999, 2000).

About the tournament

Roland Garros is the only Grand Slam played on clay and the most physically demanding event on tour. Held annually in Paris between May and June, the tournament features 15 red clay courts — a surface that slows the ball down and demands extraordinary physical endurance from players.

The tournament is played at Stade Roland Garros, a complex built in 1928 and dramatically expanded between the 2010s and 2020s. The main arena, Court Philippe-Chatrier, received a retractable roof in 2020 and seats 14,836 spectators.

Roland Garros and Brazil

Roland Garros holds the most glorious chapter in Brazilian tennis history. Gustavo Kuerten — “Guga” — won the tournament three times (1997, 1999 and 2000), becoming the only South American to lift the Roland Garros trophy. His 1997 title, won when he was ranked 66th in the world and beat the favorites along the way, is considered one of the greatest upsets in the sport’s history.

In 2026, João Fonseca reached the quarterfinals — the best result by a Brazilian in Paris since Guga. Guto Miguel won the boys’ singles title at the same tournament, while Victoria Barros and Leonardo Storck reached the junior semifinals.

Tickets

Roland Garros operates a lottery system (tirage au sort) for most premium sessions. Applications open in December of the previous year. Single tickets for non-sold-out sessions become available after the draw. Purchases are made directly through the website of the FFT (Fédération Française de Tennis).
