Carreno Busta ends seven-match Wimbledon winless run as Shapovalov retires hurt
The 34-year-old Spaniard claimed his first Wimbledon win after seven appearances without a victory when Denis Shapovalov retired in the second set following a collision with a court barrier.
Pablo Carreno Busta recorded his first Wimbledon victory in seven appearances Tuesday when Denis Shapovalov retired in the second set after colliding with a protective barrier while chasing a ball at set point.
The Spaniard had never advanced past the first round at the All England Club across seven previous visits. The streak ended not through a clean finish: Shapovalov played one more point after the collision, then withdrew due to injury. The Canadian had reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2021.
Carreno Busta advances to the second round and awaits confirmation of his next opponent from the draw.
