João Fonseca defeated Dutch player Jesper de Jong 6/1, 7/5, 6/4 on Wednesday on Court 3 at the All England Club, advancing to the third round of Wimbledon for the first time in his career — and erasing his only professional loss to the opponent.

The Brazilian 24th seed broke de Jong’s serve immediately and opened a three wins to zero lead before closing the first set at 6/1. In the second, the Dutchman broke back when trailing 4 to 5, but Fonseca regrouped and took the set 7/5. The decisive break in the third came at 3 to 3, and he served out the match at 6/4.

Settling a Score from Estoril

The result carried extra weight given their history. De Jong, ranked 71st in the world, had been the only player to beat Fonseca on the professional tour — a first-round victory at the Estoril Challenger in April 2025, on clay, by 6/2 and 7/5. On the grass of a Grand Slam, the Brazilian returned the favor and evened the head-to-head at one win apiece.

In the third round, Fonseca will face the winner of the match between Russian Roman Safiullin — a qualifier who eliminated 12th seed Andrey Rublev in five sets in the first round — and Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp. Scheduling and broadcast details for his next match will be confirmed once the opponent is decided.
