João Fonseca meets Jesper de Jong on Wednesday (1st) at 10:30 a.m. Brasília time in the Wimbledon second round — a rematch against the only opponent who has beaten the Brazilian on the professional circuit.

Head-to-head: one win to zero for de Jong

Fonseca and de Jong have met once before: in the first round of the Estoril Challenger in April 2025, on clay. The Dutchman won 6/2, 7/5, eliminating Fonseca, who was seeded eighth at that tournament. Wednesday’s match will be their first meeting on grass and their first at a Grand Slam, giving the 19-year-old Brazilian a chance to level the series.

Who is Jesper de Jong

The 26-year-old Dutchman is ranked 73rd in the ATP, near his career high of 71st reached in January 2026, and enters Wimbledon unseeded. His best result this season came at Roland Garros, where he qualified as a lucky loser and advanced to the quarterfinals — defeating Stan Wawrinka and Karen Khachanov, the latter in five sets — before losing to Alexander Zverev. Grass is not his strongest surface: he holds six wins in 18 career matches on it. To reach this round, de Jong came from behind against Australian Rinky Hijikata, winning 7/6, 3/6, 5/7, 6/4, 6/3 in a match suspended for darkness and completed Tuesday.

Fonseca’s form heading in

Fonseca opened the tournament by defeating Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut 7/6(4), 6/4, 6/3 without dropping a set — marking his first time reaching the Wimbledon second round. A win Wednesday would put him in the third round and square the head-to-head with de Jong.

The match airs on ESPN (pay TV) and Disney+ (streaming) no earlier than 10:30 a.m. Brasília time.
