Guto Miguel finishes runner-up at UTS Rio at 17 after knocking out Kyrgios
The Brazilian went unbeaten through the Melee stage, knocked out the Australian and lost the final to Brandon Nakashima 3-0.
Guto Miguel is the UTS Rio runner-up. The 17-year-old Brazilian lost the final to American Brandon Nakashima 3-0, by 15-14, 17-14 and 15-13, in Rio de Janeiro.
Before the decider, Guto went unbeaten through the Melee stage, the round-robin that opens the tournament. He won both matches, and the loudest of them came against Nick Kyrgios: 3-2 on Friday. He then beat Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo, also 3-2.
The run took him to the Final Four, the knockout stage that closes the event with both semi-finals and the final on the same day.
For Nakashima, the title came on his UTS debut.
Fonseca finishes seventh
João Fonseca did not get past the Melee stage and ended the tournament in seventh. The Brazilian beat Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 3-1 and lost to Kyrgios 3-0.
UTS does not use traditional tennis scoring. Matches are split into fixed-time quarters with their own point system — hence scorelines such as 15-14.
