Jakub Mensik needed two hours and seven minutes to defeat Jacob Fearnley 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and reach the third round of the Montreal Masters 1000.

The Czech struggled more than expected against the British qualifier, dropping the second set before closing out the match in the decider. The victory secures his place in the last 16 of the Canadian tournament.

In another result, Alex Michelsen eliminated Francisco Cerúndolo. The Argentine’s departure marks an early exit from the Masters 1000 event.

Fearnley’s performance from the qualifying rounds proved enough to push the third seed to a full three-set contest, though the higher-ranked player ultimately prevailed.

Mensik next faces Michelsen for a place in the quarterfinals.
