Wawrinka exits Estoril in likely final clay-court match
Stan Wawrinka lost his opening match at the Estoril ATP 250 to Argentine Roman Burruchaga, possibly ending his career on clay.
The Swiss veteran, on a farewell tour of the professional circuit, was eliminated Tuesday at the clay event in Portugal. Wawrinka could not overcome Burruchaga in his opening match.
The defeat may mark Wawrinka’s last appearance on clay, the surface where he captured his Roland Garros title. The exact score of the contest was not available.
The three-time Grand Slam champion’s farewell tour has now seen another early exit, continuing his circuit goodbye without a deep run on the dirt.
Wawrinka next heads to the grass-court season, with Wimbledon among the remaining events on his schedule.
