Liudmila Samsonova came from a set down to defeat Madison Keys 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the WTA 500 in Washington on Monday.
The 2022 champion recovered after dropping the opening set to secure victory in two hours and 24 minutes. She closed out the match by taking the final two sets by identical 6-4 scorelines.
According to TenisBrasil, this marked only Samsonova’s second win of the season. The Russian had to battle through a lengthy contest to advance past the American on the Washington hard courts.
