Top seed Luciano Darderi defeated Hanfmann 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the Mallorca quarterfinals Wednesday, while Grigor Dimitrov beat Polmans 6-1, 7-6(3) to record his 50th tour-level grass-court win.

Darderi’s path through both sets was untroubled. He broke Hanfmann’s serve in the 10th game of the first set and carried his lead through the second without facing meaningful pressure.

Eastbourne produces upsets on opening day

At the Lexus Eastbourne Open, Argentine Thiago Agustín Tirante marked his tour-level grass-court debut with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Stewart to advance to the next round.

British qualifier Giles Hussey was the day’s standout, eliminating seeded Matteo Arnaldi 6-4, 6-2 in front of the home crowd. Arnaldi exited in the first round.

Darderi and Dimitrov return to court in the Mallorca quarterfinals. Tirante and Hussey remain in contention in Eastbourne.
