Alexandra Eala delivered the biggest win of her career at the Grand Slam level by knocking out defending champion Iga Swiatek in straight sets in the Wimbledon fourth round, according to Ubitennis. The victory made the Filipino the first player from her country to reach the last 16 of a major in the Open Era.
Eala’s campaign continued into the quarter-finals, where she faced Jasmine Paolini on Centre Court. The 30-year-old Italian prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in a match that featured seven breaks of serve, as reported by Ubitennis. The Filipino pushed the contest to three sets after leveling at one set apiece.
For Paolini, the victory marked a second consecutive Wimbledon quarter-final appearance. The Italian ended Eala’s bid to become the first Philippine player to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final since 1953.
Paolini advances to the semi-finals at the All England Club.
