Fonseca out of Wimbledon in straight sets to qualifier Safiullin
João Fonseca loses 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to Roman Safiullin, ending his bid to become the first Brazilian man in Wimbledon's last 16 since 2002.
João Fonseca lost 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to Russian qualifier Roman Safiullin in the Wimbledon fourth round, ending his bid to become the first Brazilian man in the last 16 since 2002.
The 24th seed was unable to find answers against Safiullin, who entered the match ranked 132nd in the world. The Russian had already survived three five-setters in the preceding eight days, including a victory over former finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Fonseca dismissed the notion that he had performed poorly. Speaking after the match, he said he “didn’t play badly” and appeared undeterred by the defeat, according to Ubitennis.
The loss halts what had been a notable run at the All England Club. A victory would have made him the first Brazilian man to reach Wimbledon’s fourth round in 23 years, since the 2002 edition of the tournament.
