British wildcard Arthur Fery defeated No. 9 seed Flavio Cobolli 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-0 on Wednesday to advance to the Wimbledon semifinals, setting up a match against Alexander Zverev.

Fery, ranked 114th and invited into the draw by the organizers, controlled the opening set with a single break. Cobolli pushed the second to a tiebreak, but Fery converted on the big points to take a two-set lead. The Italian then went scoreless in the third, which ended 6-0.

The weight of the upset

Cobolli had entered the quarterfinals with momentum, having beaten Alex de Minaur in the previous round. The result ends a strong run for the Italian but underscores a sharp late-match collapse: he won no games after losing the tiebreak.

Fery now stands one win away from the Wimbledon final. His semifinal opponent, Zverev, also advanced Wednesday in straight sets, defeating Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
