Ben Shelton wins three-set Washington opener against compatriot Damm
Ben Shelton defeated fellow American Martin Damm in three sets to advance at the ATP 500 in Washington.
Ben Shelton defeated fellow American Martin Damm 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in his first-round match at the ATP 500 in Washington on Tuesday.
The world No. 8 needed two hours and nine minutes to overcome Damm, ranked 104th, in an all-American encounter. Shelton, the tournament’s second seed, has twice reached the semifinals in Washington.
The victory comes after what Shelton described as “one of the toughest losses” of his career in the opening round of Wimbledon, according to TenisBrasil.
The left-hander navigated a competitive match against his compatriot to advance in the U.S. capital.
